If you’re just getting started with your blog, you might not have considered this question yet. But a domain name- a crucial part of your branding and marketing strategy – it’s the first thing readers will see. A good domain name should be memorable, easy to spell, and make sense for what type of content you post on the site.

Domain names can also tell us something about the personality behind them: some people choose quirky or funny names as a way to stand out from their competition; others use short words that are easy to remember but don’t give away too much information about their niche or topics they write about. There’s no “right” answer when choosing a domain name, because it all depends on what feels right for you!

Choosing a domain name can be a daunting task for bloggers. There are so many options to choose from and there is no one size fits all solution. In this post, we will explore some of the most common domain names and what kind of blog they suit best.

Domain names have been around since 1985 when it was created by an engineer at NSFNET named Jon Postel. Prior to that, someone had to remember the IP address in order to connect with another computer on the internet (think about how old you feel right now).

The first domain name was called symbolics, which would become known as Symbolics Inc., and was set up by Steve Coya who wanted “a way to easily identify computers.”

What is a Domain Name in Brief?

Domain names, like most Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, consist of a sequence of characters. Reserving a domain name is similar to reserving a number on a national numbering plan in the public switched telephone network or International Telecommunication Union standards.

In both cases, an administrative authority assigns numbers or identifiers which have global scope and a set of entities can then be assigned a number or range of numbers to use as addresses.

Domain names are also called “domain”, as a shorthand term, and can appear as an address (URL) in Web pages and other Internet resource objects.

Originally, ARPANET, the predecessor of the Internet, had no method for explicitly assigning a domain name to each computer connected to it. The corresponding IP address was assigned manually by an administrator.

As the number of hosts (and networks) grew and link state protocols such as Open Shortest Path First were used, it became infeasible for every host on the network to be manually assigned a unique IP address.

The Domain Name System was introduced by RFC 882 (January 1984) and implemented in production code by the Internet Systems Consortium in January 1987.

The Domain Name Service is a hierarchical distributed naming system. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities.

Most prominently, it translates human-friendly computer hostnames into the numerical identifiers associated with those hosts on Internet Protocol (IP) networks. By providing a worldwide, distributed directory service, the Domain Name Service is an essential component of the functionality on most Internet servers and a key element in managing access to those resources.

Why is it Important to Have the Best Domain Name?

“I want to buy a website domain name but it’s too expensive”

This is one of many similar sentences I’m getting from my readers. Well, the truth is that you can actually get a domain name for $1/year and even less. Some of the domains that I am using on my websites are under $0.50 per year.

In all my articles, I am talking about how important it is to have a domain name for your website or blog and that you can easily get one if you know where to look. In fact, I found many companies that offer free domain names if you purchase hosting from them too.

My favorite hosting companies are SiteGround and Kinsta and both of them offer free domain names.

What if I tell you that you can actually get a domain name for $0.01? This is not a typo, you really can get this kind of deal as long as you know where to look. In this article, I will list the best places where anyone can get a cheap – even free domain name for their blog or website.

I will also include many other important facts about what you need to know when getting a domain name and why it is so much more than just typing www before your desired website address. I will leave out some of the technical details but I will try my best to make this as comprehensive as possible.

I hope you will enjoy reading this article as much as I did writing it. So let’s get started!

How To Choose the Best Domain Name For Your Website or Blog?

In order to understand why a domain name is so important, we first need to ask ourselves “What is a website?” The simple answer you might think is that a website is an address where you can find information. However, this is not exactly what a website is. A website consists of one or more web pages that are connected to each other.

What do I mean by connected to each other? Well, for example, if I have a portfolio section on my blog and want to show you the page about people who worked with me, I have to tell the website where to find this page.

To do so, I can simply use another address that points to this specific web page. Or I can use a subdomain name that points directly to this page on my website and you will always know where you can find this page: for example: www.joaotavora.info/portfolio/people-who-worked-with-me .

Both of these options are valid however, using a subdomain name like the one I used above is not very user friendly. Every time you want to show this web page to someone, you have to remember this ugly address.

This is why most websites use addresses like www.joaotavora.com . It is much easier to remember and you can simply tell people that your website’s domain name is “www.joaotavora.com”.

And that is exactly the reason why I recommend anyone who wants to start a blog or a website to get a domain name. Somehow it sounds weird but when I write www.thewpthemesong.com , the only thing that comes to my mind is “this blog’s address is…” and not “this is just an ugly address with no meaning”.

What do you need when Purchasing a Domain Name?

Unfortunately, nobody can tell you exactly what you need to buy a domain name online. You see, there are many different extensions (the .com, .net, .org part) that come with the registration of every domain name and they mostly depend on your needs.

I will try to give some advice based on my own experiences however it is up to you to decide what you really need for your blog or website.

Types of Domains-

A Top Level Domain is the main part of most web addresses and tells you which type of organisation or individual is responsible for it. For example: .com, .co.uk and .gov are all Top Level Domains.

A second-level domain is a division of a top-level domain and can be used to specify a subdomain within that top-level domain, such as example.ivyseedbed.com or blog.ivyseedbed.com

A third-level domain is the division of second-level domains. For example, ivy seedbed is a third-level domain that belongs to the top-level domain com.

A fourth-level domain is the division of third-level domains. For example, www is a fourth-level domain which belongs to the second level ivyseedbed.com. It’s important not to confuse fourth-level domains with top-level domains.

A subdomain is the division of a third-level domain. Subdomains are parts of second- or third-level domains, for example blog.ivyseedbed.com would be an actual subdomain in ivyseedbed.com, but another subdomain would be “blogs.ivyseedbed.com”

A domain’s name servers are the computers on the Internet that answer and contain information about a domain and its machine(s). The main Domain Name Server (DNS) for ivyseedbed.com

Importance of Having a Domain Name-

One of the more important aspects to any website is having a domain name.  It may seem inconsequential, but it actually plays an important role in how your site will play out over the long run.

Having a domain name allows people to easily find you on the web, and also makes it easy for search engines to index your site.  What you want to do is make sure that your site has a name that is short, relevant to the topic of your website, and preferably one word or very short.

For example, there are many popular sites with names like ebay.com , amazon.com , yahoo.com , google.com .  All of them are very short and easy to remember, because it is the name of the company.

There are other domain names that can be used outside of business, so if you have a personal website or blog it should also be very easy to find.  If you plan on making this site your future career path then I would suggest using the name of your company.  For example, if you are hoping to be a writer for StumbleUpon, StumbleUpon.com would be an excellent domain name for you to use.

There are many different extensions that can be used once you have an idea about what you’d like your URL to be.  You can use .com , .org , .net, or even your country’s extension if you plan on working locally.

One thing to consider however is that extensions like .edu are only available to educational institutions, so it might be difficult for someone trying to set up a site about their local band in their town to get the domain with that extension.

As you can see, having a domain name is very important to any website.  It is the first step in setting up your site, and it will make or break how accessible your site will be for visitors.  Now that you are aware of the importance of finding an easy to remember URL it’s time for you to go out and find the domain name for your new site.
