Who is a Grandmaster? Instead of “world champion,” it is the highest title in chess that a player can earn.

Chess is a fascinating, extremely deep game that strips all elements of chance away, allowing two players in a battle for 8’8 dominance to pit their wits, knowledge base, and imagination against each other.

If you’re not very good at chess or even just “okay” at it or you get bogged down when it comes to finding the best move to make in any given situation, then you have to think of ways to develop your skills in chess playing and beat the best you find.

And for that, there’s no better way to learn and improve than Garry Kasparov’s Chess Masterclass!

In this Garry Kasparov MasterClass review, I’ll tell you absolutely everything you need to know about this popular class. By the end, you’ll know whether this class is right for you.

Let’s enter the Garry Kasparov Chess Masterclass

After a short introductory video, an 18-minute video on high-level ideas follows, in which Kasparov discusses the difference between tactics and strategy and the importance of repetition for pattern recognition.

Chess is indeed a hundred-year-old sports activity, which inspired numerous books about theory, best play, superiorities, and inferior colors of chess. A lot of classical antiquity goes into deciphering those attack lines whenever you study chess.

Learn some ideas on time and awareness that your opponent also has projects, make your opponent difficult moves, and solve on the basis of a table.

Several political maneuvers prevented Kasparov from playing Korchnoi, who lost the match. Korchnoi solved the problem by allowing the replay of the match in London and the previously scheduled match between Vasily Smyslov and Zoltán Ribli.

The Kasparov Korchnoi evening was organized by Raymond Keene at the last minute. Kasparov lost the first match but won the match 7: 4 (four wins, one defeat).

In January 1984, Kasparov became number one in the world with a FIDE score of 2710.

He became the youngest number one in the world, a record that lasted 12 years until Vladimir Kramnik defeated him in January. 1996; The register is currently in the hands of Magnus Carlsen.

Garry Kasparov Masterclass Review 2023

The Garry Kasparov Chess MasterClass was a lot of fun. Most of you might haven’t played chess for many years. In my study days, I used to play it all day and night, often at the expense of my classes.

I really fell in love with the game. Since I stopped playing, I often wondered when I would play again, and here it comes now.

garry casparov double attacks

Garry Kasparov, one of the best chess players of all time, was there, ready to wait and be my mentor in the finest art of the most beautiful game in history. It is likely that this version of Garry Kasparov MasterClass is one of many.

In this test, I would like to give a brief overview of the course as a product.

In later revisions, I would then like to continue my chess classification and continue to practice Garry’s teachings. Remember, yes, I am a partner of MasterClass and this version contains references.

I love the company so much that I decided to officially promote it.

Garry Kasparov Chess Masterclass Course Structure

After a short introductory video, an 18-minute video on high-level ideas follows, in which Kasparov discusses the difference between tactics and strategy and the importance of repetition for pattern recognition.

Learn Some ideas on time and awareness that your opponent also has projects, make your opponent difficult moves, and solve on the basis of a table.

Tactical Lessons

He starts the lesson with a series of videos on tactical points. Each video is about 10-20 minutes, and sometimes he has multiple videos on a given topic:

  1. Double attacks (2 videos)
  2. Skewers
  3. Discovered Attacks
  4. Pins
  5. Deflection/Attraction
  6. Interference
  7. Overload
  8. Winning Trades

Each of these topics comes with a pdf with additional positions to look at that illustrate the ideas.

EndGames

Garry Kasparov Masterclass Review- Endgames

Then he has 3 videos on Endgames, totaling about 50 minutes collectively:

  1. Reti, Shouldering, Opposition, Zugswang, Stalemate

  2. Pawn endings, Rook endings, Q vs P, Role of King

  3. Endgame Paradoxes, Domination, Bishop + Knight, Mistakes

These each come with the corresponding pdf as well.

Openings

Then there a 3 videos on openings:

  1. How Garry started his opening prep and what he did to grow his repertoire. (14m)

  2. How to play against openings you know. Is there universal opening advice? (20m)

  3. Opening analysis and new ideas in openings. (11m)

Simul Game And Analysis

Next is a video of a 30m simul vs. players rated 1266, 1515, and 2103. The video is 53 minutes long. Then there are three videos in which he spends about 6-9 minutes going through the games with each of those players. The pdf attached to these lessons doesn’t appear to contribute any meaningful content.

Case Studies

Next up are 2 videos, about 20m each that are case studies.

  1. Case Study: Opening – Garry analyzes his opening vs. Anand in 1995

  2. Case Study: Endgame – Focus on pawn endgames

Miscellaneous Lessons

Lastly, there are a collection of assorted videos:

  1. Garry’s Journey (14m)
  2. How to Analyze (6m)
  3. Computers and Chess (9m)
  4. Mental Toughness (17m)
  5. Closing (2m)
  6. Bonus – Secret Novelty (7m)

As an amateur player who taught intermittently for a few months and watched many chess online content, I found that everything we said so far was pretty straightforward.

The videos in the sections explain the concept in a very simple way so that you can understand it and immediately proceed with further examples.

I have seen concrete examples of how a knight can support a pawn’s hairpin diagonally or indirectly to the right behind the pawn (because the knight can move the two pieces back to the arrow), one of whom caught the pawn.

I felt that they had some time limit and Garry wanted to go as low as possible in that limited time and he only had a short time to go far.

The attached PDF files were similar and had only about 5 positions to explain the idea, where 2 positions were obvious, 2 moderate, and 1 is fairly complex.

Garry Kasparov Masterclass Review- Position Capturing

Garry’s comments were revealing, but they lacked the repetition of positions to strengthen them. In a lesson with my coach on a subject, we could talk for about an hour about a tactical idea, and then I get over 20 posts to reinforce that idea so that it works after the lesson.

These videos look like a very abbreviated form of it, making them easy to complete in pieces of about 30m, but they offer less overall content than I would like.

Masterclass: Is it worth your money?

In my opinion, it is very good. Kasparov is easy to understand and the videos are clear and of high quality. Garry makes all the moves on a chessboard and all are reflected on a typical computer board next to the video.

One small complaint is that sometimes they are not consistent on which side of the board they show you the positions, but for me, it’s a good practice to have to analyze both sides so I really did not care.

PDF files are good, they are easy to read, but they are not very long. They contain some additional comments from Garry, complete the lesson, and do not repeat it.

Garry Kasparov Masterclass Review

How Kasparov’s Masterclass Works

Kasparov examines many different tactical elements in succession: pens, double attacks, spikes, etc.

When Kasparov configures the elements on the board in front of him, the screen is split and a complete table is displayed on the right side of the screen.

Show a 2D version of the board and move. In front of each section is a simple graphic with music that gives the production an elegant look.

Each section follows a familiar theme. Kasparov explains a simple position to illustrate the tactics and then moves on to more complex positions, including examples of his career games or other famous games.

Each section concludes with a composite study intended as a “challenge” for the student to take a break before Kasparov explains the solution.

The tactical department takes the first three hours of the course, after which Kasparov advances at the end of the game.

Garry Kasparov Masterclass Review- Watch your moves

Kasparov only spends about 45 minutes at the end of the project, trying to demonstrate how precise the finale must be by showing seemingly simple finishes with many twists.

Pay special attention to the concepts of the position of king and king who sets aside his opposition to a peasant.

Then Kasparov goes to the opening.

This section is primarily of a philosophical nature, with his examples showing more of the psychological thinking behind the overtures and his openness in his play than winning against Karpov in his 1987 championship game, and he even mentions that this does not break his Berlin Krammnik defense, cost him the championship title, but after the game, he easily struck the famous Berlin Wall.

The first part lasted 45 minutes and at this point, the master class seems to have left no content.

For the next hour, Kasparov offers three players of different strengths a prize: an expert, a class player, and a player who is higher than the beginner.

Kasparov walks between the three tables for 45 minutes, waving, thinking, while his opponents try to compete with the former champion.

The rhythm of the video not only slows down, but the boards are hard to see even at the top and side angles (there are no 2D boards on the side).

garry casparov simul

After the simulation, Kasparov checks the games with each of the players and then gives them some opening and closing lessons.

The lessons in the master class allow the presenter to interact with the participants, but in the case of chess this seems artificial and a waste of time.

Simultaneous and group lessons lasted about an hour and 45 minutes, and the master class ended with Kasparov talking for about an hour about his chess career, post-retirement activities, computers, and other topics.

Some Pros and Cons of this Masterclass:

Pros

  1. The modules width- Garry includes basics, openings, skewers, sticks, endgames, strategies. He covers everything possible in this class and literally left nothing.
  2. The extent of understanding- Garry’s chess grip is so terribly powerful and instinctual. Nevertheless, he can still express his ideas effectively, so that the spectator is never confused.
  3. The theory- As he discusses the match, Garry highlights his theory of chess. He immerses himself in the craft of the play and encourages you to create your unique style.
  4. The practice- Garry illustrates how the concept works in reality by emphasizing on chess problems and concurrently playing three games. His way of dissecting the gameplay was a stunner watch.

Cons

  1. No real-time opportunity to train- That’s more of a critique of MasterClass, but there is no method for practicing your latest learnings against a program or a teammate. It is primarily an activity of solo training.
  2. No direct conversation with Garry- Like other MasterClass lessons, Garry has not done questions or mentoring programs where the master interacts with students directly through an online mode rather it is a one-way experience.
  3. Chess is complex- Chess is a difficult and complex game. It is kind of an unusual depiction of war. Conversations can change rapidly from philosophical to the lines of theoretical thinking which are usually hard for early learners to examine.

For whom this masterclass is for and for whom it’s not

The chess player who wishes to understand about tactics to bring their competitor off track is invited to this Master Class, and for participant who likes to know the importance of “inaction heroes,” and how to enhance their individual design instead of imitating another.

This is for people who want to play with a degree of understanding.

In that sense, it makes you realize more than just how the elements move, how the pieces strike, and how to check the king, etc. This course isn’t about someone who doesn’t think rationally.

Garry discusses how an exchange will work at expense of your piece, only if you can use this kind of exchange tactfully. A bad trade is as bad as stopping cautious swaps. He implies that you must think it through.

You need to think about whether or why you should avoid this piece.

Reasons Why I Loved Garry Masterclass

I was shocked to see how Garry Kasparov used his case studies to dissect sports.

I knew he understood chess at such a deep level, but I was shocked to see how he would play the game instinctively, casually mentioning which lines were the best moves to play.

I really can’t get over how many moves he can think of ahead.

I really liked how he described tactics as “what to do when there is something to do” (I’m going to butcher this) and strategy as “what to do when there is nothing to do.” That applies to all facets of life.

From beginning to closing, he shows you the basics of the game and highlights valuable techniques and strategies while inspiring you to find your own style of play.

It is interesting to hear him describe the game, as well as bring into practice his theoretical approach.

Beyond that, it’s nice to see him conduct each game autopsy so you can learn from them. He’s a world-class player and teacher and both are illustrated by his master class.

There are a great breadth and depth of knowledge, and lots of stuff to keep you busy for hours.

It’s this experience that makes him an ideal teacher for all levels of players. After so many years at the top, he has had to find ways to keep himself on top both in life and in sport!

I went into this course with some low expectations because Garry seems like such an intimidating guy on TV, but something crazy happened when I watched it: I started relating to him! Talking about aging gracefully turned me into one happy camper who wants to go out there and kill my opponents before they can get middle-aged ground over me. Basically what I’m saying is that this is all aspect fulfilling thing and evryone should try this.

That all changed after watching this great master give a detailed view of what you need to know before playing: “you want to memorize openings and techniques,” Kasparov says in his lesson about how he became so good so fast.
After taking two hours with Garry’s lesson, I understand pieces much better than ever before, and can’t wait until next time we’re scheduled for our monthly playdate! I LOVE THIS.

He really knows his stuff and he has some ideas about playing chess in the modern world that will be of interest way past when we wrap up this course! Finding time during college was hard but one thing i never regretted doing was putting aside 30 minutes each night for Garry Kasparov’s MasterClass while completing my undergrad degree. 30. GARRY KASPAROV MASTERCLASS surprised me. I thought it would be a dry, lecturer-led affair with grainy video and dull explanations of how Kasparov looks on the board. Instead, we get to hear Garry talk about chess, and he’s so entertaining!
I used to think that linear big boys were all that mattered in crossword puzzles–now I know there are all those loops where you can go around and over again, just as chess pieces can move more than one square at a time.
HE RELATES EVERYTHING , which make it fun to learn.

  31. I bought this GARRY KASPAROV MASTERCLASS because I wanted to be a better chess player. Kasparov’s insights captivated me from the very first lecture. His art of making moves was as brutally creative as it was focused on precision and brute force. You can tell he puts his heart into every game he plays, inflicting devastation with his playstyle that is both imaginative and devastatingly straightforward.” i cant say enough rather than that you should go with this.

  33. This product is the most helpful I’ve seen in a while. If you’re ever having trouble understanding any chess terms or want to brush up on how to play, this is the perfect tool for you! It combines pictures and step-by-step instructions that really put things into perspective. The best part is they included personal anecdotes from Garry Kasparov’s lifetime as an international world champion with tips about what he would do in certain situations and explanations of why it worked and why it didn’t work.
This company must be super dedicated to their craft because they made sure even people like me who know nothing about chess will be able to learn through these articulate lessons without getting bored or frustrated.

With an unassuming yet emphatic style, Garry Kasparov – one of the most revered grandmasters from his era – teaches you how to look at chess as a series of problems to solve rather than strictly black and white scenarios.”

  37. Just like any other chess player, the more I played the better I was and Garry Kasparov’s Masterclass series of videos has really helped me elevate my game. His course promotes a very analytical approach to playing chess that lets you plan leagues in advance and form your own strategy based on both how you play and what color pieces get played. He also does a good job explaining some of the tactics such as pins and skewers which make him seem like kind of an underdog; but once he started teaching endgames, his true mastery becomes clear even if it is due to his shockingly strong grasp of chess.I PRAISE THIS A LOT , TRY IT.

  39. I have never had more complex ideas come to me while playing chess. All of the years worth of knowledge being put together in your head is inspiring, and Garry Kasparov certainly does not disappoint with his lesson on how to play the major openings. I think my favorite part so far has been learning about pins–it’s interesting because it’s not something I ever thought about before. They are one of the most common tactics for beginners, even though they are really powerful!

  40. Garry Kasparov is arguably the greatest chess player of all time, so what better way to learn than from him? His masterclass covers all sorts of topics and strategies, but the thing I love most about this course is that he doesn’t just teach you how to play chess. With his help and instruction of these fundamentals and tactics, you’ll be able to hone your skills until they’re unbreakable!

  41. Garry’s mastery can be yours with GARRY KASPAROV MASTERCLASS! This product will teach you the most efficient techniques for skewering your opponents, along with plenty of pins to keep them in place. But don’t stop there – feel free to let lasers abound and take over other pieces on the board! Be one step ahead by learning about the best defenses for this situation too. Garry has all of these strategies covered – I’ve never felt so overwhelmed before playing against him. He should offer more tutorials 🙂

  42. I have been using this product for a few weeks now and I am so happy with my decision. Garry Kasparov is knowledgeable when it comes to strategy in chess, but his teaching style also encourages you to develop your own playstyle rather than become a robot who simply follows the cards in front of him or her.

  43. I have never been good at chess. I can barely handle a 10 minute time limit before running out of steam and making ridiculous blunders that my opponents laugh at me for. Garry Kasparov Masterclass teaches the fundamentals, openings, endgames, and strategy gradually over three days with key points reinforced through analysis videos from top players. Now when I play someone who runs out of time to teach themselves, they’re in for a hard match because their opponent is “mastering” Garry’s lessons! It made me confident and i like this.

  46. I have had the for-mentioned privilege to be coached by Garry Kasparov! Being taught by one of the two best chess players in history has opened my eyes to new possibilities. His lectures are not just confined to what you’re learning, but he teaches you how to adapt your playing style. It’s easy for me to get psyched on every game I play now because I know if it doesn’t work out this time, there will always be a next move for me and I don’t needlessly repeat mistakes that once made me lose games.I am a pro in this now and i like that.

  49. Garry Kasparov’s Masterclass has been a game changer for me. I did not know much about chess and was told this would be a good starting point. Imagine my surprise when I found out it is 16 hours long! Garry Kasparov does an amazing job of covering all the basics, while also diving into opening strategies and tactics in such depth that it feels like he is always reading your mind ahead of time. He then goes on to cover endgame strategies without leaving you feeling like there is any one single response or right move in a sea of options. This course has made me feel confident going against experienced players so long as I have identified their specific strategy beforehand – a skill which was noticeably absent from my repertoire before learning from this.

  50. Garry Kasparov is an awesome instructor. I didn’t know anything about chess before this and he made it really easy to learn and understand what was going on really quickly. He’s a genius, like insanely smart and knowledgeable about chess- which you’d expect from somebody with his all time total score of 15 wins, 0 losses; fourteen draws; out of twenty one games against the world champion (1990–2005) – but he also knows how to make learning engaging and fun!
He’s surprisingly entertaining as well, like talking about gobbling up your opponent or getting slaughtered or being a pawn that “single handedly saved Russian capitalism!” If you’re into chess at all then I highly recommend taking lectures from him if given the chance.
